Have you ever started something new with a lot of enthusiasm? You were able to work out 2 or 3 times a week for an entire month.
You feel great, and proud of yourself because you were able to stick with it for more than a week.
But then something happens.
You have a girls’ trip planned for the weekend, have to go away to a wedding for a long weekend, or your kids both get sick at the same time and you have no choice but to drop everything take care of them.
Your momentum isn’t crushed, and when things settle down, you find yourself not prepping your meals on Sundays anymore…cause you just aren’t feeling it, taking your friends up on their weekly girls brunch date on Saturday or Sunday, ordering takeout and skipping your workout so you can reconnect with your friends over dinner or catch up on your weeks of missed DVR shows that you missed while you were nursing the kids back to health (it’s cool, I won’t tell anyone).
When momentum is on your side, you feel amazing and it leads to even more positive behaviors. When momentum is against you, it somehow sucks up the motivation out of almost everything you do. You develop….lazy couch momentum.
To avoid the lazy couch momentum, I follow one simple rule:
-
Don’t skip two workouts in a row.
We may all have days when we’re too tired/grumpy/stressed/upset to stick to our normal schedules, and that’s totally fine. Take a load off. You deserve it (even if you think you don’t).
What you don’t want is for skipped workouts to become the new normal. You can avoid this by not giving in twice.
This is one of the few times in your life when you have to reach down deep for some willpower and just make it happen. No excuses, just put on your shoes and favorite workout gear and walk out the door.
Don’t start out with full intensity if you don’t want to. If you normally go for a run, just go for a walk if you know you aren’t up for a run. Even if you go to the gym and stretch for 20 minutes, doing something to get your body moving can boost your energy. You won’t regret it.
The most important thing you can do is NOT let lazy couch momentum build. You take lazy couch’s power by not feeding it consecutive victories. Before you know it, you’ll be back in your normal routine.
It’s a lot trickier to free yourself once lazy couch momentum does builds,so it’s best not to let that happen.
If whatever interrupted your routine lasts a while, like an injury or long vacation…use common sense and don’t force yourself to exercise if you would put yourself in harm’s way….making it a point to eat the best and healthiest foods would help you maintain all that you’ve done while you are out of the gym or off the track.
Whenever things are back to normal, you should reinstate the “don’t skip two” rule. If before your interruption you had a routine of working out Monday, Wednesday and Friday, it’s fine to take Monday off to recuperate without any guilt.
Don’t skip on Wednesday.
This isn’t about torturing yourself; it’s about keeping your momentum. For that reason it doesn’t matter what exercise you choose to do. Just don’t skip two workouts in a row.
You can use a similar strategy for other habits as well, like cooking or meditation. Simply managing your momentum by doing some version of your habit—like buying a rotisserie chicken instead of roasting your own, or taking a few deep breaths in a quiet place—instead of skipping it completely twice in a row can help keep your habit intact.
I hope that these simple and practical steps will help you as you enter into the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holidays so you don’t forget what’s most important….you and your health!
